DERMAL FILLERS

WHAT ARE DERMAL FILLERS?

The structural components that maintain a youthful face start to break down with age. Volume loss (also known as medical lipoatrophy) often occurs, causing flattening of the cheeks (mid-face), hollowing can occur under the eyes. Lines may form, particularly around the nose, mouth and chin. Lips may also lose volume and definition, with lip corners turning downwards.

These changes may also occur due to rapid or significant weight loss, smoking, stress, or excessive sun exposure, and may lead to a tired-looking, aged, and sometimes unhappy appearance.

Dermal fillers are made of hyaluronic acid, a naturally found substance that is already present in our skin. The dermal fillers are derived naturally and not animal based. They come in the form of a sterilised gel. We use a range of high quality fillers of different densities so that we can use the most appropriate filler for you.

How does it work?

As we age, hyaluronic acid breaks down and this contributes to the formation of lines on the skin, flattened cheeks and a sagging jaw line. Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers can be used to restore these depletions and turn back the hands of time.

Dermal fillers can also plump up, shape and define lips. Results are immediate.

How is the treatment administered?

A full medical and facial assessment is performed, so that an accurate diagnosis can be made and a tailored treatment plan is made with a clear cost breakdown.

The treatment involves injecting hyaluronic acid into the area, usually using tiny fine needles to ensure maximum comfort. Alternatively, micro cannulas can be used. These are blunt tubes to deliver the product to the desired area without using needles, thus reducing trauma and the risk of bruising. The area is cleaned thoroughly and numbing cream, or an injectable numbing block is applied prior to treatment to ensure the treatment is comfortable. This effectively and immediately restores lost volume in the face, rejuvenates the skin, and creates a lifted, more youthful appearance.

Are there any Side effects?

Though this is a straightforward no down-time procedure, mild bruising can occur in very few cases, which is transient and fades with time. A full discussion of risks Vs benefits will take place prior to any treatment taking place.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are they permanent?

We can use short or long lasting dermal fillers with an expected result duration of 6-18 months depending on which filler is used. Hyaluronic acid filler is natural, and the enzyme hyaluronidase which is naturally present in your body will break down the filler over time.

The longer you wait, the more invasive the treatments for wrinkles become – for example dermal fillers are used when Botox® will not suffice.

Can the treatment be reversed?

Yes, this is a reversible treatment and in the very unlikely event you are dissatisfied with the results, the product can be broken down by use of hyaluronidase enzyme injections. Thankfully, we rarely ever have to do this!
